ABOUT THE CNMI BRFSS

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) helps improve the health of adults in the CNMI by collecting information on behaviors, chronic health conditions, and access to health care. This data allows public health leaders to identify health trends, understand community needs, and guide planning, policy decisions, and resource allocation. By using reliable data, BRFSS supports effective public health programs that promote healthier lives for adults across the Commonwealth.

SERVICES

This is a population-based telephone survey conducted annually to gather health information from adults aged 18 and older in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

The survey uses a random sampling method that includes both landline and cell phone numbers to ensure broad representation. The sample is stratified to reflect the geographic and demographic diversity of the CNMI.

Trained interviewers conduct the survey using a standardized script at various times, including evenings and weekends, to maximize participation.

All responses are strictly confidential, and no identifying information such as names or addresses is collected. Survey responses are combined and reported only in summary form to protect participant privacy.

The information collected is used to track health trends, guide public health planning and policy, evaluate health programs, and support funding efforts. CNMI-specific results also contribute to broader national public health assessments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's)

1. What is the CNMI BRFSS?

The CNMI Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is part of a national health monitoring program developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The BRFSS began in 1984 and is the largest continuously conducted health survey system in the world.

The CNMI began participating in the BRFSS in 2024. The survey collects information on health behaviors, chronic diseases, and preventive health practices among adults to help improve public health across the islands.

2. Why is this survey important?

Your participation helps shape the future of healthcare in the CNMI. Data collected through the BRFSS helps public health officials identify major health challenges, track progress over time, and design programs that meet the needs of local communities.

3. How are participants selected?

Households are randomly selected from across the CNMI using both landline and cell phone numbers. To participate, individuals must be 18 years or older and currently reside in the CNMI. This process ensures a diverse and representative sample of the population.

4. Where did you get my phone number?

The CDC provides a randomly generated list of telephone numbers to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation (CHCC). This list includes both listed and unlisted numbers and is used solely for the purpose of conducting the BRFSS.

5. Will my answers remain confidential?

Yes. Your privacy is a top priority. The survey does not collect names, addresses, or any personally identifiable information. All responses are kept confidential and are reported only in summary form.

6. What kinds of questions will I be asked?

You will be asked about your general health, lifestyle habits (such as smoking or physical activity), access to healthcare, and medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. General demographic information, such as age, gender, and education level, is also collected.

7. When are interviews conducted and how long do they take?

Interviews are conducted by phone throughout the year. Calls typically occur between 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM on weekdays, and between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM on weekends. Most interviews take approximately 25–35 minutes to complete.

8. Do I have to answer every question?

No. Participation in the survey is voluntary, and you may skip any question you do not feel comfortable answering.

9. Will participating affect my government benefits or services?

No. Whether or not you choose to participate will not affect any benefits or services you receive from government programs such as Medicaid or Medicare.

10. Do I have to take part in the survey?

Participation is entirely voluntary. If you choose to participate, your input helps give a voice to your community and provides valuable data that can improve health outcomes for all CNMI residents.
